Our History: Chickahominy Volunteer Fire Department
The Chickahominy Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1985 after Chief Mike Harman and the Board of Supervisors approached the citizens of the Chickahominy district and asked them to form a volunteer fire department. The department has grown by leaps and bounds in its first 15 years of service to the community. In the first year of service, the department ran over 150 calls. ![]() As a NEW Fire Company we had to have the adjoining Fire Company run calls with us for the first year. When it was first formed, the department was housed in a warehouse in the Hanover Industrial Airpark until property could be obtained to build a new station. The first piece of actual property housed in the Warehouse station was the Refrigerator. The station consisted of a bay with walls for a small office. The two trucks we started with were side by side in the single bay. In 1987 a new station was built on property donated by Leadbetter Incorporated, in memory of their founder Troy Leadbetter. Hanover County Fire Department built a shell building, with the volunteers completing sleeping quarters, offices, day room and the kitchen. In 1994 the volunteers purchased their first utility truck, which was used for vehicle extrications on Interstate 95 and to provide power, lights and equipment at fire scenes. Within it's first few months of service, it was used on several vehicle extrications and lives were saved. The need for better equipment was on-going so this unit was replaced by a Light Duty rescue truck purchased from a local Rescue Squad with Donations. In 1996, the department upgraded to a Medium-Duty Squad, which was purchased through the internet from Northeast Fire Apparatus. The 1983 Ford/Saulsbury rescue truck was previously owned by the Bellmore Fire Department located on Long Island, NY. This truck was one of the best equipped trucks around and won several awards. The Ford Chassis had two 20" wide tires in the rear and was the last fire unit we are aware of that had those tires and was still in service. This truck was taken to a local welding shop where members custom built shelves, compartments and brackets for equipment. Numerous lives were saved with this apparatus unitil it was sold to a local department in 2008 where it still serves. Not bad for a 25+ year old piece of apparatus. In Late 2006 we formed a Squad Committee and with the help of the county plans were established to build, purchase and implement two additional Heavy Squads in the County. Now a New 2008 Spartan Crimson Heavy Duty Rescue known as Squad 10 runs the roads and is a State of the Art Heavy Rescue. The Chickahominy VFD Station #10 was the "New Kid on The Block" in 1985 and is still the Newest Fire Company in the County. We continue to strive forward and try to see the Big Picture, to provide the Best for the Best by the Best. We have become a Leader in the County and will continue to serve side by side, Career and Volunteer to serve or community. |
