CVFD History The Chickahominy Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1985 after Chief Mike Harman and the Board of Supervisors approached the citizens of the Chickahominy district and asked them to form a volunteer fire department. The department has grown by leaps and bounds in its first 15 years of service to the community. In the first year of service, the department ran over 150 calls alone. When it was first formed, the department was housed in a warehouse in the Hanover Industrial Airpark until property could be obtained to build a new station. In 1987 a new station was built on property donated by Leadbetter Incorporated, in memory of their founder Troy Leadbetter. Hanover County Fire Department built a shell building, with the volunteers completing sleeping quarters, offices, day room and the kitchen. In 1994 the volunteers purchased their first utility truck, which was used for vehicle extrications on Interstate 95. Within it's first few months of service, it was used on several vehicle extrications. In 1996, the department upgraded to a Heavy-Duty Squad, which was purchased through the internet from Northeast Fire Apparatus. The 1983 Ford/Saulsbury rescue truck was previously owned by the Belmore Fire Department located on Long Island, NY. The truck is one of the best equipped around and has won several awards. Not bad for a 17 year old piece of apparatus. Plans are currently underway to purchase a larger unit to haul more personnel and be of more service to the community. This project will require a lot of planning and take several years to complete. |
